About Us: Why We Started Ostrako and What It Means to Travel ‘Like a Local’

My name is Konstantina, and if you're looking for an authentic Greek travel agency, I'll tell you this story before showing you any list of services.

Ostrako wasn’t born from a business plan or market research. It was born from a very simple idea that kept running through my head: the Greece shown on most tours isn’t the Greece I really knew.

Too many routes turned ancient temples into bus stops with a twenty-minute clock.

Too many guidebooks recited dates without conveying why those dates mattered. And too many travelers returned home with beautiful photos, but without having truly experienced the place. So I decided to do things differently.

Why I chose the name Ostrako

Ostrako is the Greek word for the fragment of pottery that the citizens of ancient Athens used to vote on the banishment of someone they considered a threat to democracy. A small, humble piece, with the power to change a person’s fate.

I chose that name because it sums up something I believe in: it’s the small details that truly transform an experience. It’s not the monument itself that stays with you, it’s the detail someone tells you about it, the gesture of a guide who stops a minute longer than planned because they see you’re looking at something intently.

What does traveling 'like a local' mean to me?

It’s not just a catchy slogan; it’s a concrete way of working. It means choosing times that avoid peak hours, even if they’re less convenient to organize. It means taking you to eat where I eat, not where there are the most signs in five languages. It means my guides don’t recite a script, but know the history well enough to tell it in their own words, like sharing a family story. This philosophy aligns with what the Greek National Tourist Board itself promotes: tourism that respects and protects heritage instead of simply consuming it.

I work from Spain, helping travelers who want to plan their trip to Greece without the language barrier or the feeling of dealing with an anonymous company on the other side of the Mediterranean. Behind every message you receive is me, or someone from my team who knows the places they’re recommending personally.

That doesn’t mean I do things halfway for convenience. On the contrary: it means that every tour, every recommendation, and every answer to your questions comes from having been there, not from having read it in a guidebook.
