We are constantly asked what the best time to travel to Greece is, and they almost always expect us to say “july and august, without a doubt”. Well, no.
Each season has its own version of Greece, and some of the best experiences we have shared with travellers have been outside the season that appears in Instagram photos. We tell you exactly how it is, without idealising anything.
If we had to choose just one season for ourselves, it would be this one. The fields are green, temperatures are around 20-25°C, and the sweltering heat and july crowds have not arrived yet. Archaeological sites can be visited without endless queues, and the sea can already be enjoyed from mid-may on the southern islands.
The honest truth: in april there can still be some rainy days, and some turquoise-water beaches may still feel too cool for swimming. But if you are looking for photos without a hundred people behind you and more reasonable prices, this is your season.
It is undeniable: summer in Greece is spectacular. Long sunny days, the Aegean Sea at its best, and all the social life of the islands in full swing. But it is also the season with the most tourists, higher prices, and heat that in Athens can easily exceed 35°C in the middle of august.
The honest truth: if you come to Athens in august expecting to stroll peacefully through the city centre at midday, you will struggle. The Acropolis in july-august can have queues of more than an hour under direct sunlight. If you still choose these dates (and we understand, it is when most people have their holidays), our recommendation is to get up very early or leave it until the late afternoon.
September is, for many regular Greece travellers, the perfect month: the sea is still warm after the whole summer, temperatures drop to a much more pleasant range, and crowds start to noticeably decrease from mid-month onwards. October already enters the low season, with fewer ferry services to some islands, but with beautiful autumn light for photographing archaeological sites.
The honest truth: from late october onwards, some restaurants and businesses on smaller islands start closing for the season. If your plan includes a specific island, it is worth checking that it is still operating on those dates.
It is the least chosen season, and also the most authentic. Athens in winter is a city that lives for itself, not for tourists: you can visit the Acropolis Museum without queues, sit in any taverna without a reservation, and see the city exactly as its inhabitants experience it. The islands, on the other hand, enter a much quieter mode, with many businesses closed until spring.
The honest truth: if your goal is beaches and islands, winter is not your season. But if you are interested in mainland Greece — Athens, Delphi, Meteora — with a lower budget and no crowds, it is an option that very few people consider and that can be a pleasant surprise.
